Hi, I’m Mark Hamilton — a classically trained educator with a PhD in Modern Humanities (with a minor in Classical Greek) and a Master’s in Latin. I’ve spent over 15 years teaching English at the college level, and for the past 6 years, I’ve focused on helping students master Latin. My background blends deep humanistic training with analytical precision.I particularly emphasize AI in my tutoring. Students learn how to think about how to use AI as they learn. Tools throughout history, from the printing press to cheap paper to the internet increased literacy by 30% or more depending. AI will increase not only literacy but massively decrease the cost at which students learn by orders of magnitude. That thousand dollar math tutor will now only cost a few dollars per week or less, available 24/7. Students tutor with me only until they feel comfortable using the strengths, and knowing the weaknesses, of learning with AI.I mix repetitive, deliberate practice with the study of interesting ideas, ancient and modern, so students have something to think about while working on the subject matter. For instance, if we're studying ancient nature writing, I might show the Stone Giants scene from The Hobbit, to show how the ancients saw nature as deadly and contrast this with the opening scene of The Sound of Music, where moderns see nature as inspiring. Students interested in the culture and mind's eye images of the ancient world are much more passionate students of ancient words.Hourly sessions are $35.

What are the Weaknesses of Using AI As a Pedagogical Tool?Clearly, one has to carefully use AI in writing. You can't have AI write a paper for you, but you can banter with it as you toss around ideas for your paper in your head. Usually, you can use a grammar check like 20th century writers used a spellcheck, but you should always openly state this in a footnote and check with the professor first. If the professor is emphasizing basic grammar skills in, say, a college freshman composition class, the professor may not want the AI to do the grammar check.Regarding math, AI is certainly not, in my experience, infallible. It sometimes struggles with screenshot pictures and, also, with complex third level questions. But this AI weakness can improve your math skills: because you can't trust it completely, you have to follow and understand its logic which overall improves its skills. Especially in third level sets, a couple of AI tools can be helpful in comparing one against the other.
